Despite ranking in the bottom half of U.S. states in terms of size, North Carolina is among the most populous. One of just nine states with at least 10 million residents, the Tarheel State has become an attractive destination for visitors, as well as those looking to establish roots. While the coast may get the headlines, Western North Carolina is especially alluring thanks to its natural beauty and exciting attractions. Here are three reasons the region feels like home to so many.
North Carolina is home to some of the country’s most spectacular mountain ranges. Renowned for its beauty, the Blue Ridge Mountains provide breathtaking vistas to motorists driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway. While they may not reach the heights of the Rockies to the West, the range does offer the highest peak in the Eastern United States at Mount Mitchell. North Carolina also boasts the eastern entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Family Fun
The region’s wild places offer a variety of fun activities for the family. Hiking, biking and camping is enjoyed throughout the year, while the high peaks are great for skiing in the winter. In the summer, take the family whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River. You’re also within driving distance of the shoreline and the state’s southernmost barrier islands, where the family can collect shells or watch the wild horses roam. With so much to offer, you’ll soon be checking the listings for Wildcat Cliffs homes for sale Highlands NC.
One of the biggest attractions, literally, in all of North Carolina is Biltmore, George Vanderbilt’s historic 8,000-acre estate. Known as America’s largest home, the National Historic Landmark features something for everyone with restaurants, shops, a winery, outdoor activities, historic farm and more. There are also destinations that celebrate and chronicle the history of North Carolina’s native people, such as The Museum of the Cherokee Indian and Oconaluftee Indian Village.
North Carolina is a great state to visit. What many are learning, however, is it’s an even better place to stay.
